Launching or redesigning a magazine or newsletter is a lot like composing a complex piece of music. There needs to be a recognizable "whole" within which there is plenty of room for different tonalities, variations on a theme, changes in pacing—and surprises. Departments should be easily recognized, features need to stand out. And the audience has to be engaged.
